Dan Wheldon 1978-2011

All at Super One were shocked and saddened to learn of Dan Wheldon’s tragic accident in Las Vegas and extend their sympathies to his family and friends.  After his first two RAC Cadet British Championship titles, Dan Wheldon raced with Super One for his third Cadet title, then went on to take the RAC British Junior Championship in 1993.  He then raced karts internationally to great effect, his finest win being at Suzuka when he took the CIK-FIA World Cup in Formula A before entering his illustrious and well documented professional car racing career.  Super One Series promoter John Hoyle said: “Dan was amongst the first batch of 8 to 11 year olds in the new for 1987 Cadet class, for three years he was the driver all the other kids had to try and beat.  That era gave Britain two Formula 1 drivers in Jenson Button and Anthony Davidson, and a twice Indy 500 winner in Daniel.  We extend our sincerest condolences to his wife, his parents and all his family.”

New Winter Series 2011/12 - KF O Plate, Cadet, Rotax
MSA Approval has been given for 3 dedicated race weekends for the ABkC O Plate for KF2 & KF3, and to include Cadet Comer & Honda and Rotax classes.  This will allow for plenty track time compared with being at a club meeting, optional Friday practice - GYG, Shenington and PFI.  The Winter Cup is promoted and organised by Shenington Kart Racing Club.  The entry and tyre/fuel order forms are duplicated on this site for convenience. Provisional points tables are here. Also please note that the ABkC O Plate for all other Direct Drive classes will be at Rowrah on 1-4 June 2012. Entry form for Round 2 at TVKC now on the forms page, or on Shenington website.
SUPER CADET PROMOTIONS
The Super One Series is committed to backing the new for 2011 Super Cadet class in its championship, and is taking positive steps to enhance the class for this year and next.  A meeting was held with some thirty interested teams, parents and entrants at the recent Glan y Gors Super One MS A round where it was acknowledged that this inaugural year has been challenging.  Some drivers have had to withdraw from racing, and the entry has diminished but the remaining seven or eight drivers are solid in their support and teams have confirmed significant interest for the future.  But for various reasons, the ‘blue touch paper’ has not yet been ignited.  Positive comments emerged from the meeting:

• Super One Director John Hoyle expressed full support for a championship continuing in 2011 and 2012, despite any adverse rumours
• John Hoyle reminded everyone that guest drivers are permitted, and do not need to register unless continuing to do further rounds
• Kartmasters promoted by Trent Valley Kart Club at PF International on 5 – 7th August will offer the class
• The TVKC meeting at PFI on 1/2nd October which includes the one off senior MSA British Kart Championship will also offer the class
• The KF Winter Series will offer a championship series
• Offers to loan equipment with discounted engine hires and sales were put on the table
• Test drives available at Larkhall Super One on 2nd July after official practice

This all shows that there is enormous opportunity for drivers to try the class before committing to 2012 Super One.  Other comments raised included that the current progression of having small karts for Cadets, medium sized karts for Super Cadet, and adult karts for the bigger juniors and seniors was the correct strategy.  However the various age limitations sometimes made it hard for clubs to offer all classes and getting rid of outmoded poorly supported classes was a common theme, along with having good value for money for the remaining core classes.
There was also a strong feeling that the class should exactly mimic the FIK and WSK championships.  (It must be noted that the MSA has its own system of registration and homologation and is considering tendering for a single engine class in 2013.)  Some felt there could be a progression from the new Cadet engine onto Super Cadet with the same engine used initially with restrictors.
There were also requests from some areas for Super One Series to take the lead in providing additional promotions and commitments to the class.  In conclusion there appeared to be some very positive support for Super Cadet and its continuation in the Super One.
